About the Vancouver Golden Dumpling Cook Off and Derby in Chinatown
SUNDAY, AUG. 9TH, 2015
1:00PM - 5:00PM
FOOD CART FESTIVAL GROUNDS (215 W. 1ST AVENUE)
Back by popular demand, Vancouver’s Golden Dumpling Cook Off returns on August 9th. Serving the savoury morsels street-side, traditional Chinese restaurants will cook up the classics while the city’s hippest hotspots will plate fresh takes on the filling-and-wrapper format. An expert panel of judges will taste their way through entries from 17 restaurants battling to fill, wrap, steam and fry their way to the top. The victorious challenger wins full bragging rights and claims the legendary Golden Dumpling trophy.
Festival-goers won’t want to miss the Dumpling Derby, when prizes are awarded to hungry competitors who duke it out for dumpling domination in a deliciously vicious eating contest. During separate men’s and women’s heats of two suspenseful minutes each, eight men and eight women gulp down dozens of dumplings. The winner of each category is declared the Chinatown Dumpling Eating Champion, and both take home a coveted prize.

THE COMMUNITY CAUSE
The Golden Dumpling Cook Off proudly supports The Chinese Elders Community Kitchen, a program of the Downtown Eastside Women's Centre. Each week a group of Chinese Elders get together to cook and share a meal in a safe space. It's a place where isolated Chinese elders have the opportunity to connect with each other. Proceeds from the cook off will go towards this integral community program.
